Samuel Christian Friedrich Hahnemann, MD
10 April 1755 – 2 July 1843
Homeopathy was founded in the late 1700s in Germany by Dr. Samuel Hahnemann and has been used by homeopaths around the world for more than 200 years.
Dr. Hahnemann, a master of languages, an acclaimed chemist as well as a doctor was frustrated with how medicine (leaching and bloodletting) was practiced, at times he felt that the medicine was inhumane. This frustration led Dr. Hahnemann to research and experiment repeatedly on himself and on other healthy individuals until he found something that provided consistent results: "like cure like" in minimum dose (the lower the dose, the greater the effectiveness), which became the foundation of homeopathy. Simply put, a substance which can cause symptoms when taken by a healthy individual in large doses can be used in minimum dose to treat those same symptoms in the sick. It is important to note that the principles of homeopathy have been used for centuries before Hahnemann, going back to Hippocrates.
For example, red onions makes one’s eyes water, so according to this principle, homeopathically prepared onion (known as Allium cepa) is used to treat a form of allergies which produces watery eyes.
Homeopathy is unique amongst holistic therapies because it is based on Individualization, taking into consideration the totality of symptoms both physical and emotional rather than focusing on the disease. In homeopathy, the focus is the mind-body connection thereby stimulating the body's own natural healing process, bringing vitality back. Homeopathy can be used along with conventional treatments and medicines.
Homeopathy is extremely safe and can be given to children and pregnant / nursing women and even your pets. Homeopathic medicines are regulated by Health Canada and have drug identification numbers.
Homeopathy is the second-largest system of medicine in the world, with over 200 million people using it on a regular basis.
In Ontario, all Homeopaths must be registered with the College of Homeopaths in Ontario. This means that the homeopath has undergone rigorous training which includes direct and indirect clinical studies.
